Update for March 20, 2020
March 20, 2020
Dear Peace Lutheran Faculty, Staff, and Parents:
As we continue to move ahead through uncertain times, we must also contend with information that changes frequently. Some of it we can disregard, and some of it has a definite impact on us.
Perhaps the most current example is the news coming out late this morning regarding Michigan school closures. We are aware that there has been an announcement by the Michigan Department of Education stating that remote learning during this time of school closure will not count toward instructional hours.
Our Michigan Lutheran Schools Superintendent and our Michigan Association of Nonpublic Schools (MANS) representatives are addressing this issue and have clarified what this means for all Michigan nonpublic schools engaged in student learning activities. We have been assured that this decision by the MDE does not impact our Lutheran Schools. MANS has stated that our nonpublic school bodies are free to make their decisions for what is best for our schools. Our distance learning instruction will be recognized as part of our school curriculum and counted toward instructional days.
In our remote learning, we continue to add value to our students’ education. Our teachers remain in contact with our students, valuable education and student development are being provided, and we will proceed with learning. Teachers are working. Students are working. Parents are partnering in the educational process. The world in which we live is changing, and we need to adapt to things appropriately and in the most helpful way possible.
The continuation of remote learning may extend beyond April 14, but we remain committed to our students’ education, regardless of a change in the venue and the process. Connection to the familiar school group will provide our children with a sense of routine and comfort. Most importantly, we are absolutely devoted to connecting our families and children with the Body of Christ at Peace and encouraging them in their faith life.
This is new information, but we assure you that we are keeping up with developments as they come. Please be patient as we continue to gain clarification on this developing topic.
In all things, God is with us, and God is working. May we, as His people, reflect the light of Christ and continue to do His will.
Sincerely, in Christ,
Carol Stathakis and Peace Lutheran Church and School
