Bible Lessons From My Backyard #4: Ants at My Picnic

“Consider the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.” Proverbs 6:6-8

In another translation, verse 6 goes like this: “Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones!”

Ants are certainly not lazy. In fact, they are industrious and hard-working! Have you ever been on a picnic and noticed the ants? Maybe you were just bothered, but if you’ve ever taken time to watch them, you’ve seen how determined the ants are to do their work. Did you know that the ant is one of the strongest creatures in relation to its size? An ant has the ability to carry between 10 and 50 times its own body weight! If an ant finds a tasty crumb, even a big one, it might carry it away, so guard your sandwiches and potato chips!

What can we learn from the ant? Every day, we have the choice of being either industrious or lazy. Life is filled with situations that call for hard work. You can use your circumstances to produce or achieve something, to help someone, and to get ready for the future. Or you can waste time, disappoint others who are counting on you, and avoid accomplishments. God’s Word is clear about which of those choices is the choice of blessing, and you’ve learned that by experience. Relaxing is important and necessary sometimes, but when it’s time to work, getting right at it is the right choice.

*What chores have you helped with this week?

*How do you feel about being industrious and hard-working, and how do you feel about being lazy?

Dear God,

Thank you for the ability to produce hard work. Thank you for the people and the good things that benefit from my work. Please help me to complete the tasks that are waiting for me. Amen.
