Music Programs

Band

General Objectives for the Peace Lutheran School Band Program

•!•  To recognize that music is a gift from God and that we are to use the musical gifts that God has given us to the best of our abilities.

•!•  To teach and promote self-respect,  self-discipline, respect for others and for Musical instruments.

•!•  To play some really great music (and FUN!), and to play it well.

•!• To enjoy the music-making process.

     Beginning Band

Beginning Band is offered to students in the 4th grade who are interested in playing an instrument. In the Beginning Band, students will learn how to play their chosen instrument, read music, and learn some basic fundamentals of music and music making.

Typical instruments in a school band are: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet (or coronet), trombone, and percussion.

Advanced Band

The Peace Advanced band is comprised of any 5th, 6th, 7th , or 8th grade students with any previous band experience. The Beginning Band members from last year will automatically be moved up to the Advanced band unless the decision is made that they are not prepared to move on.

The members of this band will study more complex and challenging music, music making, music theory, and some music history. We will also try hard to practice good listening skills. The Advanced band will perform several times throughout the year.

                                                                                                               Practice-

All students are expected to practice. Band, like any other sports team relies not only on the individual to make the teamwork, but also on the others in the group. In order to grow, the growth has to occur as a whole. If one member of the band in not practicing, he or she is holding the entire group back.

Just as in any graded class, there will be homework.  For the beginners it may be hard, but with regular practice, a little time, patience, and effort, playing will become easier. It is very important to practice on a regular basis to develop endurance (and I can’t stress this enough!) and consistency.  For the players of wind instruments, the muscles around the mouth need to be developed and built up. For the percussionists, the muscles in the wrist need to be developed and strengthened.

Grades

Band grades are based on preparedness for class, participation in class, practice sheets,

and attendance for performances.  If for some reason, a student should have to miss one performance, an acceptable excuse slip (see back of packet) should be filled out and turned in NO LATER than two weeks prior to the performance. If a student fails to attend a performance without a written excuse, their grade will be lowered by half a grade.

Beginning Band members are expected to practice every other day for 20 minutes.

Advanced  Band members are expected to practice every for 20 minutes, 5 times a week.

Beginning Band members will turn in their SIGNED practice sheets every Thursday (unless otherwise noted).

Advanced Band members will turn in their SIGNED practice sheets every Thursday (unless otherwise noted).

***Practice sheets are available in the Music Room.

Concert Attire

Because Peace does not provide band uniforms, I ask that for all performance, students wear white on top and black on bottom. If a student fails to show up for a performance NOT wearing the proper concert attire, they will not be allowed to perform with the band.

For girls-black slacks or a black skirt (no mini-skirts), black tights or nylons, black dress shoes (no flip flops please!), and a white shirt with a collar (no tank tops please!)

For boys-black slacks, black socks, black dress shoes, and a white shirt with a collar

Band Fee

For each student in the band program, there will be a one time fee of $25.00. This fee aids in the purchasing of musical equipment, books, and music.

Recorders

Recorders are taught to all students in 3rd grade. Students will need to purchase a recorder from me for the duration of the class. The cost for each recorder is $5.00. Students will also need to have a separate folder to keep their music in.

Choir

Peace Lutheran offers two strong choirs that aim to serve the Lord through its dedicated students and parents. The choirs get the opportunity to sing in chapel and every other month in church. The choirs are also responsible for most of the singing at the Christmas program, the Student Led Worship, the Spring Musical, and the Memorial Day Service.

These choirs have maintained an excellent standard  and are always an enrichment whenever they sing!

SONSHINERS

Grades 1-4 have the opportunity to be involved in SONSHINERS. All first graders will automatically be in Sonshiners and are requested to sing for designated church services, whereas the second through fourth graders who choose to join Sonshiners are required to sing for all designated church services  and programs If it is necessary for a 2-4 grade student to miss a singing engagement, due to illness or special circumstances, an excuse form must be filled out, signed by a parent, and given to Mrs. Rohwer. Choir grades will be given based on ATTITUDE, BEHAVIOR, PARTICIPATION in class and PARTICIPATION at sing ing events If a student has an unexcused absence, his/her grade will be lowered by half a grade (A- becomes B+ ) . Each 2-4 grade Sonshiner is required to purchase a Sonshiner T-shirt  ( $12) . This will be worn, along with a white polo shirt and dark pants or skirt at scheduled events.

UNASHAMED

Grades 5-8 have the opportunity to be involved in UNASHAMED. All students choose to be in this choir. A choir grade is determined by the student's ATTITUDE, BEHAVIOR, PARTICIPATION in class and at the designated singing events. Unashamed are required to be at ALL the designated singing events.. If it is necessary for a student to miss an engagement, a music excuse form must be filled out and signed by the parent and given to Mrs. Rohwer.  Unexcused absences will lower a student ' s grade by 1/2 a grade. (A becomes a B+) Each Unashamed member is asked to purchase an Unashamed T - shirt ($12), along with a white polo shirt, and khaki pants or skirt and wear it at his/her scheduled event.

BOTH CHOIRS ARE INVOLVED IN OUR CHRISTMAS MUSICAL AND OUR SPRING MUSICAL. OUR 1-4 GRADERS ARE MORE HIGHLY INVOLVED IN THE SPRING MUSICAL.

In His service,

Mrs. Grace Rohwer

Puppeteers

The Peace Puppet Ministry involves students in grades 6- 8 that wish to partake in using puppets to act or sing in chapel and church throughout the year. This group of students is also the group that is involved in some of the dramas that are done for school and church programs.

The puppets are scheduled to sing once a month at the 11:00 church service. Students wishing to be involved in this group need to circle the dates they can attend. This will determine your practice schedule. All puppeteers need to be at Puppet-Preschool Ad vent Service, the Student Led Service and the Memorial Day service.

Practices this year are different; We will have some practices during the school day and every other Wednesday after school. They will also be receiving a grade, which is determined on using practice time wisely and attendance. Practices will also be at 10:15 on the Sunday that they perform. It is our opportunity to use the stage and church.

Those students that have been involved in the puppet ministry have been an asset to our school and church life. Their ministry has enhance our worship and brought the ' Little ones ‘ to know Christ. Their service is greatly appreciated by me!

Please fill out the back form and return to your child' s teacher. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, September 7, after school for

15 minutes to set up our schedule for the year. Please bring your signed form AND the Sunday dates that you can be involved.

Blessings... Karen Priehs
