At Peace Shelby, all K-8 classrooms are equipped with Smart Boards and workstations. The computer lab, which is available to students Preschool 4 and up, has 27 workstations. Each class spends time weekly in the computer lab with instruction from a dedicated Computer Teacher. Our preschool 4 and 5 classes use IPADs for more individualized attention.
Peace Shelby offers several options for students to express their creativity and fine art skills:
Art: Art class is taught one time a week for Grade 1-8.
Choir: We have two choir options: Sonshiners Choir (Grade 1 - 4) and Unashamed Choir (Grade 5 – 8). Our choirs add their voices to our weekly chapel services as well as our church services once a quarter. Participation in choir is optional in Grade 2- 8.
Band: Our band program is available to students in Grade 5 - 8. Our Grade 5 students are part of a beginner band and students in Grade 6 - 8 make up our advanced band. Participation in band is optional. An annual fee of $25 will be charged in September for participation in band.
Recorders: Recorder instruction and class to taught in Grade 3 and 4 one time a week.
Music: Peace students Grade 1 - 4 have music class once weekly. Our students are taught various music related concepts.
Puppets: Grade 6 - 8 students are invited to participate in our puppet choir. Our puppets add their voices to our church services throughout the year.
Clubs and other Activities
There are fun activities for every student's interest at Peace Shelby. Our after school programs include several Boy Scouts and Girl Scout troops, a chess club, floor hockey and others. We have a very active PTL that arranges countless events through the year including the Grandparents' Day, Panther Prowl in the Park, Santa Secret Shop, Easter Egg Hunt, Daddy Daughter Dance, Mother Son activities, Ice Cream Social, Field Day and more.
Curriculum at Peace Shelby includes age appropriate religion, math, language arts, handwriting, social studies, science and physical education. Each year, students participate in a Knowledge Fair, Spirit Week, Spelling Bee, Essay Contest, field trips and a Talent Show. Peace is nationally accredited with ranking in the 90th percentile in IOWA Achievement Testing.
Special Education Services are provided through Lutheran Special Education Ministries (LSEM). LSEM takes a proactive role watching young students and helps to identify challenges early on, as well as works with students of all ages with assisting in the development of lesson plans, creating individualized strategies for students who may be struggling.
Speech Therapy is provided by a licensed Speech Pathologist through Utica Community Schools. Students are referred to the speech program through their teacher and/or parent. Services are usually provided once a week at Peace Lutheran School. Speech is provided in a small group setting or one on one with the student depending on the needs of the child.
Occupational and Physical Therapy Services are provided through Macomb Intermediate School District. Students are referred to the program through their teacher and/or parent. Services are usually provided once a week at Peace Lutheran School in a small group setting or one on one.
Physical Education classes are a part of the curriculum of the child. A well-rounded program of physical education classes complemented by a complete set of facilities is our key to a successful program. Students in Grades 1-8 have a dedicated Physical Education teacher and class time twice per week. Students in Grades 5-8 are required to wear physical education uniforms. Peace Shelby offers a full range of sports activities for boys and girls through out the school year. Our sports program offers:
Boys: Soccer Grade 5-8, JV Basketball Grade 5-6, Varsity Basketball Grade 7-8 and Track & Field Grade 5-8.
Girls: Soccer Grade 5-8, JV Volleyball Grade 4-6, Varsity Volleyball Grade 7-8, JV Basketball Grade 5-6, Varsity Basketball Grade 7-8 and Track & Field Grade 5-8.
An annual fee of $25 is charged per child who participates in an athletic team.
